Hello,
Having run into the same issue myself, I can confirm that this is possible.
OneDrive can be configured to use an external drive. The size of the folder is generally not the cause of the problem.
Make sure the drive remains connected, has sufficient free space, and is preferably formatted as NTFS.
If needed:
- Click the OneDrive icon > Settings > Account.
- Select Unlink this PC.
- Start the OneDrive setup again and sign in.
- When prompted for the OneDrive folder location, click Change location.
- Choose a folder on the external drive.
- Complete the setup and allow OneDrive to start syncing.
Keep in mind that the external drive must remain connected whenever OneDrive is running, otherwise syncing will stop
