Can I use an external drive for my OneDrive folder in Windows 11?

The answer is: Sometimes, but not always. It depends on how Windows classifies your specific external drive.

What OneDrive requires:

  • The drive must be formatted as NTFS
  • Windows must see the drive as a Fixed Disk, not a Removable Disk

The confusion explained:

Many people think "USB = Removable = Won't Work." That is not always true. Some external SSDs and desktop external hard drives report themselves to Windows as Fixed Disks even though they are plugged into USB. If your drive does this, OneDrive will happily accept it as a folder location. If Windows sees your drive as Removable, OneDrive will refuse to use it.

How to check your drive:

Open PowerShell and run these commands:

 

Get-Disk | Format-Table Number,FriendlyName,BusType,MediaType,Size,IsOffline,IsReadOnly

 

Get-Volume | Format-Table DriveLetter,FileSystem,FileSystemLabel,SizeRemaining,Size

 

Get-CimInstance Win32_DiskDrive | Select-Object Model,InterfaceType,MediaType,Size

 

Get-CimInstance Win32_LogicalDisk | Select-Object DeviceID,DriveType,FileSystem,Size,FreeSpace

 

Paste the results, and I can tell you right away whether OneDrive will accept your drive or not.

 

A few important notes:

  • Do not format or move any files yet
  • Do not create symbolic links or junctions as a first step
  • The size of your OneDrive folder is not the issue
  • The drive letter does not matter

What I will look for in your results:

  • DriveType = 3 means Windows sees it as Fixed — this is good
  • DriveType = 2 means Windows sees it as Removable — this will likely fail with OneDrive
  • FileSystem = NTFS is required
  • FileSystem = exFAT or FAT32 will not work

Once you share that output, I will tell you exactly whether you can use the normal OneDrive setup process or whether you need a different approach.
