Effects of changing the Organization name
Renaming the OneDrive folder (actual path name) will not work as the client tries to "lock" the path. If the client is turned off, and then renamed - we will error out. You are able to change the friendly name of the entry that shows in file explorer, but note that this would not change the name that is accessible when navigating from command line.
The alternative here is renaming the tenant friendly name so the desired name can appear in all of the clients appropriately. However, we would not be able to smoothly transition for an already set up client. A client would need to a fresh setup, or be unlinked/relinked in order to handle the newly updated tenant name. We changed the organisation name from "long organisation name" to "organisation".
Microsoft told us it could take up to 48 hours to promulgate but it did not.
Still when we sync OneDrive, even on a new user, it shows the old, long name.
I need to shorten pats to do the following:
From C:\Users\user\long organisation name\Team Name - Documents\General\Channel Name
to C:\ABC\organisation\Team Name - Channel Name
Team Name - Channel Name will be easy by syncing each Channel, but it is all the rest that is causing grief right now.
- This is probably what's going on with the majority of cases I've seen around, but seems like nobody understands it. I changed organization's name a couple days ago and since then I was misled by numerous "try this" and "try that" and wasted many hours changing registers, deleting folders and messing with credentials. This morning I simply tried to sync the tenant in a PC that haven't ever had any contact with it before and it still keeps the old name. So I'l try again in the next couple days and I'm pretty sure it will be the new one. The real problem is I scavenged the internet for the official information about propagation time and Microsoft does not specify it anywhere.
Previously i've changed this for a client and within a few hours was able to 'unlink' and re-sync a sharepoint folder and the new short-name was used. I've just tried it on my own sharepoint this weekend and it has been 48 hours, still won't use the new short name.
I'll wait another day or two...maybe it will take longer 😞
How long did this end up taking? I modified the org name yesterday and still nothing 😞
azfititguy it took a ticket to Microsoft and some weeks for one client - an absolute nightmare.
For another, it happened after about 4 days or so - some got it quicker than that.
