Good question. These are my thoughts.
Technically the SKU is the same as the full priced SKU, just with a pricing promo attached.
Therefore, my expectation would be that you could upgrade from Essentials to Premium.
But by doing so this may remove the pricing promo.
The price promo is in part based on the customer not having previously purchased any licenses for the product.
I would recommend raising a service request, explaining the intent and asking for confirmation it can be done. Even if Microsoft have to perform a background action to re-apply the price promo.
