Teams Video call Custom Backgrounds - Release date?
Hi,
Is there a release date for Teams custom backgrounds for use on video calls?
It was announced earlier this year with a release date of "later this year" but I've seen nothing more concrete since?
Thanks
Paul
- Not currently. It was demoed as early back as March 2019 so there are a lot of asks for it
The guys at Regarding 365 recently did an update on it which may be worth watching

Would recommend keeping an eye on the Microsoft 365 roadmap, as well as Teams Uservoice.
Hope that answers your question
Best, Chris

I updated my Teams client to 1.3.00.8663 (64 bit) today and now have a wide selection of pre provided (by Microsoft) backgrounds to select from.

I've figured out how to use a custom background.
Save your image /s in the uploads folder for teams.
Mine was located here:
C:\Users\YOUR_USER_NAME_HERE\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Teams\Backgrounds\Uploads
Then in teams; click the three dots > Show Background Effects
The pictures you added should be there with the included default backgrounds
Good Luck!

seanwindremThanks! This certainly worked for me. On a Mac the path is:
/Users/<your_user_name>/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/Backgrounds/Uploads/
However, I'm surprised there isn't a button to upload your own image somewhere in the interface. It's a bit kludgy. Hopefully Microsoft will make this a little easier to use.

Did the backgrounds folder get created during install/update of Teams. I'm on Microsoft Teams Version 1.3.00.8663 (64-bit) and I don't have the backgrounds folder. I navigated in the finder to here:
/Users/<your_user_name>/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/

thanks Sean,
My trail ended at Teams ... then went to logs .... Oh well = I will just keep waiting. Still interested in why so low in Likes but Views are OTT.
Any ideas?

The 3 dots that you are referring to, would those be in the left Nav? I only see apps. seanwindrem

Scott Tupper, I believe seanwindrem is referring to the three dots, more menu within the call. Backgrounds is rolling out and so you may not have that option yet. I don't have but here is a image.

Although happy for the custom background integrated with blur feature, it doesn't sound like they will have a Green Screen option like in Zoom. In Zoom when you do not use a Green Screen the image can get distorted when user moves. So the Green Screen option allows a better viewing experience if you have a solid green background...I use it with just a piece of old green fabric my wife had laying around. Sorry to digress...any hoot, will be interesting to see how well the customer background works and see how it handles movement distortions. PJR_CDF

troberge Read that closely -- the current roadmap release is significantly lacking -- MS gives you 8 canned images to choose from, no ability to select your own image.

cknight725, while it might be true that 8 canned backgrounds are coming out at least it is a start for now. According to the M365 admin center it is starting to roll out.

as, due to the coronavirus global lockdown , millions are forced to WFH.
We (or I , to speak for myself) do not seek for the perfect solution at this moment.
It's true though that, judging from viewing the demo,
handling movement distortions was not very encouraging.

Ok what is the problem here... 25 k views and only 6 likes... ok 7 likes including mine.
Come on MS your users want this, I want to be on the Cruise that got cancelled, I want to be mingling with friends in fact, I want backgrounds that I can tailor so please... either your 25 k counter is skewed or your how to LIKE is too hard to log into?
This one is a no brainer! please MS - come and party on the cruise I did not go on via backgrounds.
Much love... we love your product - Lenka Boorer

I too would like to follow and see a release datePJR_CDF
- IanCaldwellIron Contributorfingers-crossed! massive jump in demand for Teams, and my users are also looking at other options like Zoom - which does have some very nice features like the grid-view of videos... it feels like the Teams app does not handle video in an industry-standard way, compared to products like Zoom or AdobeConnect.

would like to see these updates as well... looking for privacy features for business.

I was on a call with a Microsoft person and he had it (but not everyone in MS does). So it's at least released in their tenant somewhere!
