Teams messages search function does not show full conversation
To spare you from further disappointment - search in Teams is currently almost useless. The good news is that Microsoft has heard our complaints loud and clear and is working on an improved search experience.

Not sure they heard out loud and clear VasilMichev still seems to be the same. I cant jump to a message in a search of chat with a user
- JayTruongJun 28, 2022Copper ContributorI'm being frustrated here at work as I am not able to jump to a conversation from the search window. Microsoft please fix it.

DAY 1,102 and Microsoft *STILL* has not addressed this problem. Starting to think they just don't care.

VasilMichev While I apprecaiate your optimism, it's now over 3 years later and Teams will still not let you view more than one message after doing a search. How hard is it to add a "jump to message" option from there so you can get some context? It's really pathetic how long it takes them to get around to such simple fix. They probably still use Webex up there in WA.
- Phil LyleMar 27, 2022Brass ContributorThe workaround for first popping out the chat of the person you are wanting to search, then going back and searching and clicking on the result does work. Very stupid.
- phlyxMar 28, 2022Iron ContributorThat work around only works if the conversation is a chat, that absolutely does not work if the conversation is in a Team's channel which 99% of our discussions we search for are. And MS needs to fix this, work arounds are like sticking your finger in the dam rather than fixing the hole.
- ItsWouterDec 22, 2021Copper ContributorDon't think they are working on it...
- MichelZCFDec 22, 2021Brass ContributorThey literally put out a blog post this month:
https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/microsoft-teams-blog/new-and-improved-search-results-experience-on-microsoft-teams/ba-p/3035064- phlyxDec 22, 2021Iron Contributor
MichelZCF Really like the blog post (....not), especially the part that says:
For longer messages, the results show a snippet of the part of the conversation that matches the search. Click on a specific message result to expand and view it in full. Are you kidding me?!?!?! That is what this entire thread is about and no, it does NOT view the conversation in full. <thud-thud-thud> ... can't bang my head on this keyboard anymore. Going to see if we can talk our IT folks into
GOING BACK TO SLACK!
Microsoft hasn't done anything right since Vista... hard to even say that with a straight face.

VasilMichev 2 years later and it stills seems to be an issue....
- phlyxOct 27, 2021Iron ContributorWas scrolling thru these messages and this is a helpful hint for search syntax:
The work around is to do a search, when you find what you're looking for, look at the date and who that was.
- To get all their (Paul for example) posts that day, in the search box type:
(from:paul sent:7/14/2021)
- To get all their posts to you that day:
(from:paul to:scott sent:7/14/2021)
- To get all the posts you and they exchanged that day:
(from:paul to:scott sent:7/14/2021) or (from:scott to:paul sent:7/14/2021)
I'm sure there are other combinations for syntax but that last one gets you the entire conversation you had with someone on a particular day.

MORE THAN TWO YEARS LATER. NO USABLE SEARCH FUNCTION.
When people say "Microsoft has heard our complaints loud and clear and is working on an improved search experience" or "send feedback to Microsoft".
Me:
Microsoft has proven multiple times over that they do not give a single whit about user experience or feedback.
- OmarMtzAug 23, 2021Copper Contributor
VasilMichev , funny they heard us in 2019 and i am in 2021 searching a fix for the same issue. I know it's supposed to be positive feedback only but it is hard not saying teams is probably the worst chat application around and a terribly developed tool. Sorry guys, but I know Microsoft is capable of much better.
- phlyxAug 24, 2021Iron Contributor
OmarMtz I totally agree. I think the number of times I ONLY want the one message in a conversation is ZERO, the number of times I need to see the ENTIRE message thread is right around 100%, make that exactly 100%. This is ridiculous. This is the equivalent to searching in Outlook and all it gives you is the subject line and you have to manually search through your Inbox (and sub-folders) to find the email to read.
Search in Teams.... 100% USELESS!!!
Never thought something would make me miss Slack but this sure as h3ll does.

VasilMichev MS heard us loud and clear and working on improved search function for over 1 year now. **bleep**, I miss S4B.
- Jason DrewOct 01, 2020Iron Contributor
lukas77 I understand your frustration but I think Teams is still way better than S4B.
- ChristianBergstromOct 01, 2020Silver Contributor
lukas77 Hey, for what it's worth a new search experience in Teams (powered by Microsoft Search) is going to be available later this year. It will improve the search experience and make things less complicated.
