Student edits on Word don't save in Teams

When I post an assignment and include a Word document with permissions for each student to edit a copy, the students are able to hand write on the document (Surface Pros), which functions as expected. However, when I enter the assignment to view it, the assignment appears to be blank.  I noticed that if I select the 3 dots on the right of the document and select 'open in Word,' all the edits appear.  This is a huge inconvenience for me to take this extra step for each student.  Occasionally, the correctly edited document does appear without having to click on the 3 dots, however if I close out that student and then go back to them later, the edited document no longer appears.  Please advise.
