Search people in Teams with display name

Hi, Guys.

We discovered stragne symptom in teams, but I am not sure why it happens, and anyone who know a reason or resolution, please comment it.

We added M365 users and assigned licenses to Office 365 admin center so that for using teams, after some hours or 1 day, if we search people in teams using display name , it cannot search anyone , but after then if we try to search user using upn, it works oddly using display name to search people.

  • Hi, to solve this problem, just follow this few steps below.

    1- Teams Admin Center;
    2- Teams Settings;
    3- Roll down ultil you find "Search by name" and turn on;

    This change can take a few hours to replicate, after replicate you can try again and share the result with me.

  • Hi hongwoo_jin

    There should be a few ways around this

    1.) Type out the first name and press enter. The search result should include a people result. Are they in there?

    2.) Use the Who Bot application and search. This can be accessed by the app bar on the left of the Teams client. Select More Options (...) and if you don't see it, search for it

    3.) Is it the same behaviour on the web app at https://teams.microsoft.com?

    It may be a case of prepoulation. In other words, try chatting to a few individuals in the business and then do a search on them to see if they come up. In addition, it could just be propagation where it takes a few days

    Let me know how you get on

    Best, Chris

      Hi, Christoper , thank  you for your comment.

      We tried it and let me share the result like below. This symptom came up not all users but some users.

      Even if we typed fist name press enter, it cannot still work for anyone who didn't search using display name in search bar or new chat bar.

      And  using Who Bot which you suggested, it works well as we hoped.

      Teams search bar use Exchange directory to search people as I know.

      That is point I wonder in case of Who Bot is which directory use to searh people? Do you know?

      Those problems came up both teams client and web version too.

      We hope to this process is under prepopulation, but even if we wait time to sync all M365 services, there is no change any more.

      Best, Hongwoo

    hongwoo_jinrunning in cloud-only I cannot reproduce this scenario. If I add a user to my domain via M365 admin center they become available to add to Teams, chat and search within 30 minutes using the display name or UPN. I have no on-premise domain so all identities are cloud-only for all services.

    Are you configured with a hybrid connection for user identities, Exchange or other?

      LeeDrinkwater  it only works not hybird but cloud only environment. Do you have any documents which describes about search attribute in teams or exchange online.
