New Teams giving notifications even when in Teams

Noticed today that notifications seem to be more frequent in New Teams. Example - I am actively viewing a channel and another user sends a message in the same channel. I receive a pop-up notification in the lower right even though I am actively viewing the channel. Has anyone else seen this? Seems a bit much.
