monitoring chats

We are giving our users access to the chat function, as they are working remotely and we do not want them tying up their phones talking to each other.  I have a couple of questions.  Our environment is that we have Office 365, but host our own email addresses if that makes a difference.

Are the employee's private chats saved anywhere?  Can they be monitored by their managers?

Thank you in advance.

  • That depends on your configuration, and I'm not sure yours falls into any of the "supported" scenarios. Messages are either stored in the cloud mailbox for the user, or if such doesn't exist (for an On-Prem user or a Guest one), in a "shadow" mailbox. That requires some additional setup though as TonyRedmond details here: https://www.petri.com/teams-compliance-records-hybrid-exchange

That should cover eDiscovery, but if you are talking about the supervision/compliance communication type of "monitoring" of conversations, things are different. cfiessinger should be able to provide more info, as I don't recall testing this scenario myself.
