Misleading mail tip when attaching OneDrive file to Teams chat
- Nov 18, 2021
Hi folks,
We have a fix for this in-progress and expect it to be rolled out in January! Thanks!
Stephen RiceSenior Program Manager, OneDrive
MS Support said this tip is by design. After reading your response, I can see how it would be by design if the recipient was external. But that doesn't make sense internally.
m36five Now that's interesting. Makes me wonder what's preventing the internal users having their permissions verified before clicking on send. For sure that message isn't by design inside the organization, but rather shows as the evaluation to OneDrive doesn't succeed. So how's the behavior outside of teams using "Specific people" internally?
This is how it should look like because it's a "on-the-spot" kind of permission. Are you sure it's not a mix-up going on as those messages are quite similar?
(from my own org. only internal people in the chat)

ChristianJBergstrom, I am certain this is occurring with internal users. We have thus far tested six accounts and all six have the same behavior. But I did discover something:
I cleared my Teams Desktop cache (cuz why not?!) then tested by logging into the same Teams Desktop client but as a user in our test tenant. Same inaccurate mail tip. But our test tenant and production tenant have similar settings so then I logged in as a user in a demo tenant I have and the issue does not occur there.
I compared the SharePoint/OneDrive settings and found these settings in the tenants that get the inaccurate mail/chat tip:
I found these settings in the tenant that does not have the issue:
I then changed the settings in the demo tenant to match our prod and test tenants and, bingo! The same inaccurate message appears!
So, this is an issue on the Microsoft side for tenants that have "Specific people" as the default link and "Edit" as the default permission for sharing links. This message should either be removed when sharing internally, or it should be changed to something accurate and not misleading, like "The recipient will be given View rights on this file, once sent. Select file to edit permissions."

m36five Hello, tried to reproduce but instead get these.
This is with the default value set to "Specific people" with the respective View and Edit setting
This message pops up after viewing the "Specific people" menu in the file sharing prompt.
Perhaps you should reach out to the official support and provide some feedback.

ChristianJBergstrom, thanks for providing those additional screenshots and for all of your input. One of our engineers has an open ticket with Microsoft and I'll report back here with whatever progress is made.
