Microsoft Teams echo during interviews and meetings

I'm constantly finding that when I join Microsoft Team meetings for interviews and business meetings that people are getting echoing during the meeting which is annoying .  I am also a member of Microsoft Community but nobody from Microsoft is answering our questions about the same subject.  I have reached out to Microsoft Technical Support on the telephone to be told they cannot help me unless I purchase MS 365 Business subscription so I was told to come to this online techcommunity to get help please with finding a solution to the problem not just talking about it.  Thank you!

thanks for your reply.  It's not me that has the echoing but the people on the other end who have invited me to their Teams meetings via their business/work Teams accounts.  They are getting echoing.  I have a SurfacePro 8 with built in microphone and speakers.  This has only become a problem in the last 2 months and I have found many other people have reported the same issue on another Microsoft Community group.

  • JC1961 I’m thinking there’s a bug. We’ve been in teams/sfb for more than a decade. No recent hardware or software changes. But suddenly 5% of users with the same problem in the last 10 days. When they join a teams meeting with either the new or old teams the other participants hear themselves as an echo. Changing from the built in SLS/SP mic/speakers to Jabra headsets to aux headphones make no difference. But switching to teams on the web fixes it 100% of the time. Also no issues when the user switches to a personal computer with the desktop apps.  Something up!

Stephanie Nichols thank you for your good and helpful response. I've updated my Teams app although confused at what app I'm using now as there is not just one! Definitely a bug but I wish Microsoft themselves would address this global issue and not just all of the community who suffers from the problem

There are many different things that could be causing your issue. Could you explain the issue in a bit more detail? Does the echoing start immediately when you start a meeting or does it gradually start and get worse as the meeting goes on? Also what type of mic and headphones/speakers are your using? Is it a headset with microphone or are you using a combo of desk mic and speakers?

I have had similar issues when using built-in mic and speakers in meetings. Have you tried using some type of headset of earbuds? Sometimes when using speakers in a meeting the mic picks up the sounds coming from the speakers creating a loop and the person one the other end hearing their own voice in a second or 2 delay. Though that should not be an issue when using built-in speaker with a SurfacePro. It should filter out the incoming sound from the mic but maybe it has a glitch after a recent update. To test if that is the issue you could try a test call with the volume turned down so you can barely hear it and see if the echo sound is still there or if it has got any better. If so then I would recommend using some type of headset for your meetings.
You can also try disabling audio enhancements.
