"Message from yourself" used to spam users.

Hello all,
a User was asking, how he got a message from "himself" he wasn't writing.
I'm sure he wasn't sending a spam link to himself.
Is it possible to check "messages with yourself" as admin or reconstruct the situation?
any Ideas?
