Islands mode without Edge
We have SFB 2015 with basic functionalities.
While we are planning to Move to Teams, we don't want interop between SFB and Teams
On-premise AD is synced with AAD
for Islands Mode, can it work without Hybrid setup/without edge servers
and other than Contacts migration, any other limitation
- Right Federation on Teams can be enabled but not on Skype for Business as no EDGE is present. Yes then two separate infra without interop SFB <> Teams could maybe work but Meeting Migration Service will not work either next to not being able to move contacts.

A Skype for Business Hybrid setup requires EDGE Servers. Skype for Business Hybrid is required to have Teams and Skype to work with Federation. All Federation DNS Records must point to Skype for Business On-Prem and can only be removed or reconfigured when all users have been migrated to Microsoft Teams. This means all federation requests come into Skype for Business Server and are sent to the Online users over the Hybrid Connection. Also the Hybrid setup is required for the Skype for Business On-Prem & Teams Users to have Interop working between the platforms.
Additionally you will need to use TeamsOnly for the users that need to receive federation in Teams Client and no longer in Skype for Business. Any other Upgrade Mode including Islands Mode will receive federated & interop communication in the Skype for Business client (even for online users)
Without hybrid any external federation can only go to one platform, and you won't have any option to progressively move any users to the cloud service as no interop will exist between the two services.
Agree, Can we go for Teams only Mode without impacting SFB Users (we don't want to add Edge servers and no interop is required), after accelerated setup of Teams,we will decommission SFB; will it be supported approach.

Yes you can enable the users to Teams Only Mode in Microsoft Teams. You can enable the users for Microsoft Teams and they can use both SFB On-prem and Teams Simultaneously with two separate infra.
