Is there any way to add a Slack like chat channel to a teams > channel > tab

No you cannot. They should add an option to have a channel threaded or not but honestly I’ve always picked threads over chat. Chat exotically chat that actually has traffic is a jumbled mess. With posts you get replies and keep context of conversations together and it is so much easier to catch up when context is maintained.

Not to mention alerts are so much better. What I do in out “chatter” private channel In our team is set my alerts to only alert on new posts. This lets me easily choose to follow a topic or not by clicking the ... and turn on notifications for the thread and or reply which by default alerts for others replying to my posts or ones I reply too. This way I don’t get bombarded by a conversation I’m not interested. You can also turn off notifications for a post thread in the same manner for when you want to check out on one. You get used to it. Don’t overthink post as something more than clicking on the chat bar. It has its benefits.

Also look at pinning your chatter channel. It puts it front and center in teams and in your chat tab in mobile making it more like a readily available chat.
