I have added members to a team and they are not receiving any email or notification for them to join

I have followed the instructions on how to add members to a team and when I go to 'manage teams' they are listed but no one I have added has received a notification yet. What am I doing wrong? Is there something not in the instructions that I should have ticked but haven't?
