Guest users removed from Teams Group Chat
- Mar 18, 2025
Yes, your assumption is correct: when the creator of a group chat leaves the organization and their account is disabled in Entra ID, it can lead to external users being removed from the chat.
To prevent this from happening again, here are some recommendations:
- Add another internal member to the chat to avoid it being tied to a single owner.
- Use a shared channel instead of a regular group chat for better external access management.
- Check the audit logs in Microsoft Purview and Entra ID to understand exactly what happened.
- Ensure that external access and guest settings in Entra ID allow collaboration without relying on a single user.
If Microsoft are monitoring this channel letting you know this is still a bug if this can be please be looked into fixing.
When the creator of a chat we had with external trusted org parties was disabled (left employment) the external parties were removed from the chat and we're unable to readd them, nor any other external member. This chat has 11 other internal members.
We have had to start a brand new chat which is less than ideal as referring to the history is important for the managed service we are running.
