Guest users removed from Teams Group Chat
- Mar 18, 2025
Yes, your assumption is correct: when the creator of a group chat leaves the organization and their account is disabled in Entra ID, it can lead to external users being removed from the chat.
To prevent this from happening again, here are some recommendations:
- Add another internal member to the chat to avoid it being tied to a single owner.
- Use a shared channel instead of a regular group chat for better external access management.
- Check the audit logs in Microsoft Purview and Entra ID to understand exactly what happened.
- Ensure that external access and guest settings in Entra ID allow collaboration without relying on a single user.

Adding/having other internal members does not seem to help. Somebody internal likely needs to remove the creator of the group before the account get's disabled to replace chat ownership for the group to survive uninhibited for continued use.
