Corporate Teams background images gone
Hi,
we just discovered that since yesterday the corporate Teams background images we provided via Teams Admin Center -> Meeting policies are all gone and the button to add new ones is missing.
They are missing in both web and desktop application, they seem to be still working in iOS App (but could also be just some kind of caching there?)
Is the removal of backgrounds part of Teams Premium? Have there been any changes? Is this related to some kind of licensing issues?
Bahatjez This is a known issue. You can see this in your Office 365 admin Service health portal with issue number TM481007

- MarcelK1785Copper ContributorI stumpled upon Teams Premium which I've never heard of before and I read about changes starting December. I don't hope they remove this feature to implement it into Teams Premium...
- ToDie1993Copper ContributorHeard about it at the ignite. The announcement page does not mention that this is a feature of it.
- Raymond_666Copper ContributorFirst user reporting this was dec 6., I tested then and no issues.
Today, they are gone, and several other users report the same.
Cannot find any official info from Microsoft regarding this.
Loved the feature, manually deploying them to xx.xxx users are not an option.- It seems a bug so should be solved later..
MarcelK1785 This should still be working. But just went to the place and cannot see them myself :S
- have you tried it via Powershell as i think this is a hickup https://byteben.com/bb/deploy-custom-microsoft-teams-backgrounds-easily-with-powershell-and-intune/
- pbarksCopper Contributor
We are also missing this functionality. I'll submit a support call and see what they say. I have not tried any PowerShell activity to resolve this as of now. MarcelK1785
- pbarksCopper ContributorSupport call has been submitted and will follow up if I hear anything useful back from MS support.

Hey ! Same thing here... Would be good to know what happens...
Is this a bug following an update or a feature they just removed...
Happy to have information if someone know.
Thanks !

- BahatjezCopper ContributorThanks for the hint ! 🙂

We have the same here as well.
Unless the users have the license "Advanced Communications" then it still works.
- HexYeahCopper Contributor
Chiming in to say that our org is experiencing the same. I am able to get to the Teams Admin custom image setting even with the degradation, but all users are unable to see the backgrounds on the desktop client even though they are in %Appdata%Microsoft\Teams\Backgrounds. It's almost as if Teams is no longer pulling images other than the defaults.
Edit: We use E3 licensing, FWIW

The "Custom meeting images" button in the top right screen of the Teams Meeting policies has reappeared this morning after being gone yesterday. Clicking on it shows our custom backgrounds and that it is enabled. However, they are still missing when users start a meeting and click on Background filters even though the images do exist in %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Teams\Backgrounds.
Also, how does one speak to a human in support? Both Microsoft Business Support: 1-800-865-9408 and https://admin.teams.microsoft.com sends me back to the Teams Admin Center which doesn't give me any way to contact support.

It seems that there is an on-going Service Incident that is affecting Custom Meeting Backgrounds. This is reporting to be fully resolved by EOD today, as of now I'm not sure if the issues you are experiencing while conducting meetings is a part of this Reported SI.
Additionally, it states that Only Teams Premium Users or those with an Advanced Communication license will have access to use these images. I had checked your active subscriptions but didn't see the above licenses, do you perhaps have either of these licenses that I may not be seeing on my end?- Petri-XBronze Contributor
Is there actually two different issues at the same time?
Issue 1 (which seems to be resolved😞
TM481007 - Admins may be unable to access the “Customize meeting images” feature in the Teams admin center
Issue 2:
Users has lost the images from the folder: %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams\Backgrounds\Uploads
Users are able upload the images back into folder, but it is quite bad message for users that "all images they have had, are now lost. Wish you had backups..". But is it so that Microsoft has not published anything from this?
- MarcelK1785Copper ContributorWer are using Microsoft Business Premium licenses, so this is why we lost access to background images afterwards? Is every user that wants to use providede corporate background images required to get another license now?
This is pretty bad practice in my oppinion giving the chance there a licencing plans covering a whole year... - RandyDiezCopper ContributorMy reply back to M$. Folks need to increase awareness to your local groups and open support tickets to complain about this issue. Need some big noise for this to be resolved fairly.
"We have been using the custom image background for over a year without needing the Premium subscription. As an educational institution we have limited resources as compared to business customers. Forcing customers to pay more for a feature that we have already been using does not make good business practice or sense. Asking customers to level up their subscription for new and additional features is fine. However, taking away a service that customers have already been paying for and charging them to get back that service is pretty much extortion. How will Microsoft address this issue?"- RandyDiezCopper ContributorTheir reply?
"I want to personally say that I understand whole heartedly where you are coming from regarding this situation. Additionally, I want to provide the Feedback Portal link (https://feedbackportal.microsoft.com/feedback) where you will be able to create a post and explain how you would like to see this process moving forward. Additionally, you will be able to look for similar posts and upvote them so that they can gain traction.
As we are a break/fix department I do not have any visibility/control on new processes that role out. From documentation this "Teams premium" is advertised as an add on license, and as of now, not sure if it will be included in any subscriptions/licenses (Ex M365 E5). Additionally, the official pricing has not come out, but will when it gets closer to General Availability. As of now this is advertised as 10$ Per User Per Month. "
- BahatjezCopper ContributorThe "customize meeting images" button is back on my Teams admin center but I still can't see the corporate images in my teams client... Is it the same for you ?
- MarcelK1785Copper ContributorYeah same for me, that's why i guess our users have insufficient licenses/addons
- BahatjezCopper ContributorThanks... Indeed would be good to know if this is really the issue.
This feature was working without dedicated license until then...
- pbarksCopper Contributor
I have the same issue where I can see the button but cannot see the images in the teams client. We are and E5 shop. at the same time, I cannot turn off the feature. Once I get into the "customize meeting images" button, I cannot disable or toggle off the option for the "Custom Backgrounds". Its greyed to on.
- AnthonyM285Copper Contributor
I have the same issue where I can see the button and see the images however the clients are not downloading the Custom Images to the Teams Clients or Web Versions. I even removed one image and re-added to see if that was the issue, however same result.. I have escalated to Microsoft again this morning pbarks
- RandyDiezCopper ContributorCustom backgrounds have also been restored for us. Hopefully this a permanent fix and not a temporary one where they will require us to add another subscription.
- MarcelK1785Copper Contributor
So it seems this problem is back again today...
Is Teams Premium finally kicking in?
- HexYeahCopper ContributorLooks like we've lost the battle, folks. Time to open up those wallets again...

MarcelK1785 this just started this week again this was a problem on the back end of teams back in December.. Microsoft can you please investigate this a problem on the back end
- HexYeahCopper ContributorEveryone at our Town Hall was freaking out this morning about this. I love it when a feature gets turned off /s
