Contact list no longer available in new Teams version

When new teams go live, can I keep using the old version? The new version only has a chat list and no contact list. I regularly use my contact list to determine if someone is in the office. ...

The People app in Teams is pretty worthless as it does not show the user's status in the contact list and you have to now select each group on the left to display the contacts on the right. Defeats the purpose. I can just use Outlook to view this same data.
