Hello Rosemarie85 this sounds more like a Word issue than a Teams issue. I found a question on our answers.microsoft.com tech support site that describes a similar situation in general. ThereseSolimeno Thank you for this and it has been helpful.

I have checked the setting as per the article and I can confirm the block to show white space was ticked.

I'm not sure how to resolve this problem because if I open the letter into the desktop app, the letter reflects but not on Teams.

I'm assuming the only way to work around this problem would be to open the letter in the Desktop App, sign and then it will automatically update the letter saved on Teams.
