Can't seem to set up Teams

I've downloaded the .exe file a number of times, and keep getting a screen that says a link will be sent so I can start using Teams. I've tried multiple times over the past four days and nothing happens. Any suggestions?

I'm working from home and a client wants to use Teams for meetings -- just because that's what they use. I don't have Office 365, if that makes a difference.
