This already exists, it's called the asset library, see more here: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Set-up-an-Asset-Library-to-store-image-audio-or-video-files-96532bf6-dc72-4f82-bf0a-21ef945c4d04
In my opinion the asset library in SharePoint is not a good alternative cause you are not able to use it with CURSOR Keys to navigate to the next image.
