what you describe are exactly the symptoms I had till last week. As described above I created a ticket and the topic was quite fast accepted as a global Microsoft server issue and disappeared after the weekend.
I recommend you to create a ticket as well and to refer to this thread in order to avoid discussions, that it is related to your specific (client) environment only.

I created a ticket and the issue was resolved for our calendars
