Cant open Microsoft word document

Hello,

I am trying to open a document from a few years ago. When I try and open the document my mac says "We're sorry. We can't open this document because we found a problem with its contents. No error detail available. Location: Line 3, Column 9. 

I tried a few things I found on youtube such as changing the document from plist to doc, and txt. But no luck. Are there any solutions out there? Thank you.
