Struggling To Understand Licensing For Intune

I am looking at Intune to manage our Windows laptops and corporate issued mobile devices. However I am struggling to understand the licensing needed for this.

We have access in the admin center to Office 365 E3 licenses which I have assigned to myself. However when I am trying to sign in to a brand new laptop using my credentials I get the following error message "DeviceCapReached". I am confused as this is the first device I am trying to enrol.

Can anyone point me in the right direction. TIA

Jon

  • Hi,

Office 365 E3 doens't have a Intune license. And the error that you will see is a Azure AD / Entra ID error.
Check the Azure portal -> devices -? device settings.
There you will see a dropdown under "Maximum number of....".

And you can see the number of devices under your account in Azure AD.

      Hi
Thank you for that. What license do I need then to use Intune?

You have all sort of licenses with Intune, like the ones below:
        Microsoft 365 E5
        Microsoft 365 E3
        Enterprise Mobility + Security E5
        Enterprise Mobility + Security E3
        Microsoft 365 Business Premium
        Microsoft 365 F1
        Microsoft 365 F3.

But if you want to keep your Office 365 E3 license, just purchase the EMS E3/E5 license as an add-on.
Then you have the Intune feature plus a lot of security features, like AAD P2, PIM, etc.
