Security Baseline Profile – Internet Explorer Settings

Hello Everyone,

While configuring the Security Baseline Profile for Windows, I noticed a section under Configuration settings > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Internet Explorer, which includes several relevant settings.

Given that Internet Explorer is deprecated and has been replaced by Microsoft Edge, I wanted to confirm:
- Do these settings still hold any relevance?
- Do they have any impact on Microsoft Edge, even though they are configured under Internet Explorer?
- If these settings are relevant to IE only, are there any similar settings available for Microsoft Edge?

Please guide. Thanks

The IE policies would still affect Edge if the website is running in IE mode, as well as any apps you have that might be using the WebBrowser Control which is also based on IE

Another area which I am pretty sure where they are used by Edge more directly is for Security Zones which are still used in Edge for some specific scenarios. There is a good blog post here that talks about it - https://textslashplain.com/2020/01/30/security-zones-in-edge/

I finished working on a Policy refresh for 24H2 for my environment. I decided to implement the Internet Explorer Baseline Policies as per the template as a precaution, but also use the Edge Policies to Disable IE mode (since fortunately we dont have any sites that require it in our environment)

  • Hi, from what I understand, the Internet Explorer settings in the Security Baseline Profile are mainly intended for legacy support. They don't have any impact on Microsoft Edge, as IE is deprecated. If you're looking for similar security configurations for Edge, you'll need to refer to the administrative templates and security baselines specifically designed for Edge.
