Intune Licensing Options

I need to setup Intune for our Office365 tenant.  Currently, we have mostly Microsoft 365 Business Standard and not Microsoft 365 Business Premium.  I have located Microsoft Intune Plan 1, which is $8/month and Microsoft Intune Plan 1 Device, which is $2.70.  When I used the Microsoft site to compare the two license types, they both appear to be the same with all of the same Intune features.  We mainly have Windows 10/11 Pro laptops that are all joined to our Microsoft Azure AD with "Microsoft Entra registered" as the join type.

My question is why the difference in licensing prices between Microsoft Intune Plan 1 and Microsoft Intune Plan 1 Device?  I mainly need Intune so I can manage the laptops and use the wipe feature if the laptops are ever lost or stolen.  We will sync OneDrive via SharePoint to these laptops.

Thanks for any input.

  • Hi Shepcon,

Intune Plan 1 and Intune Plan 1 Device are two different licensing options for Microsoft Intune.

    Intune Plan 1
is a user-based license that gives users access to all of the features of Intune, including device management, application management, and data management.

    Intune Plan 1 Device
is a device-based license that only gives users access to the device management features of Intune.

The difference in price between the two licenses is due to the fact that Intune Plan 1 gives users access to more features, including application management and data management.

For your scenario, you only need the Intune Plan 1 Device license, since you only need to manage devices and use the wipe feature.

Here is a table that compares the two license types:

    Application managementYesNo

    Price$8/month$2.70/month

Thanks, Leon. And I presume that even though the device license is for a "device" it's still assigned at the user level within Office365.

        Shepcon

you are right, you can just assign the license to the user who will enroll the device.

The licence is based on a trust level.
