Word 365 suddenly read only mode

I am working on a Word document, have been for maybe a month, making changes and additions and saving as I go along when suddenly today, when I stied to save the latest version, I am told it is read only.  Two questions: How did it suddenly switch to read only; and how do I change it back to edit mode? I am not able to follow the "help" instructions/
