Word 365 hangs up on my Mac

I use Word in Microsoft 365 on a Mac mini M1. Today I tried to open an existing Word document and I get the “spinning rainbow” on and on. I can’t do anything on my computer.
Any thoughts on how I get back to work?

Here are a few steps you can take to try and resolve the issue:

    1. Force Quit Word:
    • Press Command + Option + Esc on your keyboard to open the Force Quit Applications window.
    • Select Microsoft Word from the list of applications.
    • Click on the "Force Quit" button to close Word.
      • Wait a few moments, then reopen Word to see if the issue persists.
    1. Update Word:
    • Make sure you have the latest version of Microsoft 365 installed on your Mac.
    • Open the App Store on your Mac.
    • Click on your profile picture at the bottom left.
    • Go to the "Updates" tab and check if there are any updates available for Microsoft 365 or Word.
    • If an update is available, click on the "Update" button to install it.
      • After the update is installed, relaunch Word and check if the issue is resolved.
    1. Repair Office:
    • Close all Office applications, including Word.
    • Open the "Finder" on your Mac.
    • Go to the "Applications" folder and locate the Microsoft Office app.
    • Right-click on the app and select "Get Info."
    • In the Info window, check the box for "Open using Rosetta."
    • Launch Word and check if it works without freezing. If it does, you may need to wait for an update from Microsoft that fully supports Apple Silicon.
    1. Reset Word Preferences:
    • Quit Word.
    • Open the "Finder" on your Mac.
    • Press Command + Shift + G to open the "Go to Folder" window.
    • Enter the following path: ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Word/Data/Library/Preferences/.
    • Locate the file named "com.microsoft.Word.plist" and move it to the trash.
    • Relaunch Word and check if the issue is resolved. Note that resetting preferences will restore Word to its default settings, so any customizations you made will be lost.
