Windows 10, Office 365, Exchange Online confusion. Help?

Hi,

I recently launched my own small business and intend to keep using my personal device for both personal and business purposes. It's a Surface Pro 4 with Windows 10 Pro and Office 365 Home.

But in order to use a Outlook with a custom email domain it looks like I'll need to use Exchange Online which is only available under an Exchange Online subscription or Office 365 Business Essentials or Office 365 Business Premium subscriptions. Questions as follows:

(a) Do I really need Exchange Online to use a custom email domain with Outlook?

(b) Should I simply add an Exchange Online subscription to my existing set-up?

(c) Should I cancel Office 365 Home and adopt Office 365 Business Premium instead?

(d) Can I do that given that I would be logging into Windows with my personal Microsoft account and into Office 365 Business Premium with my new company credentials? Would that work?

To give you some additional background, I am currently the only employee of the business but expect to employ 3-4 others over the next six months.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tim

    Hi Tim,

    My 2c

    (a) Do I really need Exchange Online to use a custom email domain with Outlook?

No, you could use a hosting company to host your mail. However Exchange online does offer some great benefits (mailbox size/calendar sharing capabilities - to mention just a couple)

    (b) Should I simply add an Exchange Online subscription to my existing set-up?

To answer 2 questions at once, I'd suggest looking at acquiring an O365 Business Premium license - it provides everything a small business/startup would want/need to begin, with the ability to upgrade the license/s as your business expands.

    (c) Should I cancel Office 365 Home and adopt Office 365 Business Premium instead?

    See above

    (d) Can I do that given that I would be logging into Windows with my personal Microsoft account and into Office 365 Business Premium with my new company credentials? Would that work?

Yes, you can have both accounts on the same device

I hope that answers your questions :)

    Regards

    Paul
