For O365, the workcycle period is 7 days.
The answer is "it depends on the workload"...
As Vasil points out, Exchange mailboxes are processed by the Managed Folder Assistant (MFA), which runs on a workcycle basis to make sure that every mailbox is processed at least once weekly.
Background processes take care of SharePoint and OneDrive sites to ensure that files that have to be retained are kept and those that should be deleted are removed. However, SharePoint and OneDrive block people from deleting files that have a retention setting, so it's a very different regime.
Skype for Business IM conversations and the copies of chats captured for Teams are processed by the MFA like Exchange items.
