transfer Domain godaddy to microsoft 365
Just be aware, when godaddy removes it, it will DELETE the tennant from godaddy, so make sure everything is migrated out of godaddy before making the switch.
As an additional note...everyone PLEASE stop getting Office 365 from godaddy, it only leads to messes in the future 🙂
- SanchoPandaMay 28, 2024Copper ContributorI wish I'd seen your advice about 365 and GoDaddy before I purchased it. I'd also like to follow the advice that others have posted on here but it is far too technical for me. Here's where I am:
I'm just a regular guy with a small business that has a domain hosted by GoDaddy. I liked the look and functionality of MS Office 365 so set about buying it. During the purchase process, I was given NO CHOICE but to purchase through GoDaddy (presumably because my email address is linked to the domain name). At no point in that process did GoDaddy or Microsoft indicate that - despite me paying full price for 365 - I wouldn't get all the functionality.
So, fast forward to now, I have invested in a CRM because it is an add-in for Outlook 365 but, because my purchase of 365 was through GoDaddy, I can't get the add-in!!!!
I feel I have purchased 365 under false pretences - as I can't use it fully - and I also can't get the full functionality of my new CRM!!! What kind of scam is this? Why does Microsoft allow this?
Does anyone out there have any advice as to how I could move away from GoDaddy (that defederating article/advice got way too complicated for me very quickly) to a domain host who will allow me to use the full range of 365 functionality - or at least use the add-ins that MS have sanctioned?- HelpMeHelpMeRhondaMay 29, 2024Copper Contributor
SanchoPanda How many users are on the domain?
The easiest option is to pay a professional who has had experience doing this.
The biggest issue I had was GoDaddy would not release the domain for so long, meaning there was a lot of downtime (emails bouncing) while 20 people kept saying it is released, there is propogation time, but they had not released it. And only their senior people can do it, you can't.
I understand there are other ways of changing from GoDaddy to Microsoft within the same tenant without deleting the domain and creating a new domain but that was too complicated for myself to follow. That seems to be the safest way if you can contract someone who knows what they are doing.
If I did it again myself, I feel what I might do is:
1) Set up a Google Workspaces account;
set up the domain and mailboxes, change the MX records to Google;
2) delete the domain from GoDaddy and tell them to delete it from their end;
Create a new Microsoft tenant and add the domain;
Keep on GoDaddy's back until Microsoft let's you add the domain to the new tenant;
3) Set up the domain and mailboxes in Microsoft, change the MX records.
Only really any good for 1 or 2 mailboxes because you'd have to export and import everyones mailboxes, onedrive, sharepoint, etc both migrations and new Outlook profiles.
In theory this would completely get around Microsoft not letting you move domains between tenants despite you owning the domain and requiring that the domain be cleared from their back-end before re-adding it to a new tenant.
There is however another potential issue - I have migrated domains from Google previously and sometimes there is another back-end system that tells Outlook to look for authentication from Google even when it has been removed from Google. There is a workaround for that tho until it is resolved. I forget what that back-end system is called off-hand.
But in summary: yeah: you only know how totally stuffed up GoDaddy makes 365 after you are "locked" into their system. But it is Microsoft that has really screwed up the migration process. Even splitting domains from Microsoft tenant to Microsoft tenant when companies split or joining domains from Microsoft tenant to Microsoft tenant when companies merge is a huge headache and for absolutely zero reason. I was doing that in 2020 and it would take 24-48 hours (typically 6 tho except when an issue arose) for Microsoft to "remove" a domain from a tenant before you could add it to another. These days it's more like 2-4 hours (typically 15 minutes). Which is what I expected with GoDaddy too.... nope.

Thanks for taking the time to relate your experiences and to offer advice. I really appreciate it.
There are only two users at the moment, myself and my business partner, so it makes sense to get on with this sooner rather than later. I agree that it's best left to a professional - I really have no idea what I'm doing. As I said, I'm just a regular guy who thought having a website hosted by a reputable(?) company like GoDaddy would not cause me any issues.
I can follow step-by-step instructions but when the 'defederating' article got into copying code - even super-simple code for those with knowledge and experience - I thought "I'm out!"
It's a lesson learned. Not only will I be trying to extricate myself from GoDaddy, I shall be advising others to steer clear too, if and when the subject arises.

BenStegink you say it normally takes 10-20 minutes for the domain to be released from GoDaddy's NETORGFTxxxxxxxx.onmicrosoft.com tenant and be available for the new Microsoft tenant?
I'm 3 hours and counting and still getting To add this domain to this account you will need to contact GoDaddy support and have it removed from NETORGFTxxxxxxxx.onmicrosoft.com. After removal, it can take between 15 minutes and a few hours before you can add the domain here. Please wait, then come back here and resume this step.
I know separating out companies or merging companies tenancies it's usually been fairly quick. Maybe having to disable directory sync in source tenant issues. But as we have no control over any of that I have been putting off this GoDaddy to Microsoft migration for 18 months.
Finally bit the bullet.
3 hours of hitting the Verify "Try Again" button I am losing my hair and grinding my teeth.
Now I read someone on here couldn't get it to work after 14 days?!?!
If it's any more hours, can I just add the domain back to GoDaddy???
- BenSteginkFeb 22, 2024Iron ContributorI've never tried to move it back to godaddy, so maybe? Without diving in and looking through everything it's hard to say why it's having issues. Lately I've also gone the route of defedering from GoDaddy first as well (see the posts further below)...that gives you a lot more control over it so you can force things to go quicker rather than waiting for GoDaddy. You still have the goofy domain, but once your deferderated you're in complete control.
- HelpMeHelpMeRhondaFeb 22, 2024Copper ContributorWell, no, you can't undo and go back to GoDaddy either.
Seems whether you try to repurchase licenses and add them back to your domain, or they try to restore any of the mailboxes, seems their automated system checks [any mailboxes?] [No] [Therefore needs a new tenancy] [Attempts to create new tenancy with that domain] [Errors saying domain is in another tenancy, must remove it from that tenancy first]
FFS.
So I've set up a temp cPanel IMAP account until GoDaddy Super Senior Admins I assume with the secret Admin codes log into the Microsoft Admin Centre > click on Teams and Groups > Active Teams and Groups > Distribution list > and delete the distribution lists left behind. And THEN actually delete the domain.

Here's my problem: I NEVER signed up for godaddy to put any of my domains in a 365 tenant.
At least one of my domains, an old one I don't use anymore, has been hijacked by them. I just tried to add it to my existing 365 since, hey why not at least capture it. But to my utter surprise I'm told godaddy has already added it to another tenant.
They did this on their on with no notice or permission. I have no way to access it, no account information, and they haven't ever billed me for 365.
So now I have to waste time on this dealing with support. NONSENE.
- oper859May 04, 2022Copper ContributorIn my case I have only the domain registrar and "Email Essentials" account with Godaddy. The email account was migrated by Godaddy to O365 via their federated tenant. This subscription will end next year. I currently have a Microsoft 365 Family account and I will want to move my tenant from Godaddy to Microsoft so I can use my own domain emails with my Microsoft 365 Family subscription. I don't have a problem exporting all my email to pst and them importing back to my 365 family account. I'm only very worried by all the stories i read related to the procedure to get Godaddy to delete my domain from their tenant so I can add it to Microsoft. Is there a magic word when calling Godaddy and ask them to do this to minimize the outage caused by this move ? I had very bad experiences with Godaddy tech support, it seems they have people there that are completely unqualified for this.

BenStegink What do you mean by "make sure everything is migrated out of godaddy before making the switch." What do you mean by "migrated" and how do I do that?

alesrs emails in Exchange, files in SharePoint, if you are using Teams and want to retain conversations. The last time I did one of these, as soon as that domain was removed from GoDaddy, everything you had in Microsoft 365 w/ GoDaddy was deleted. You couldn't "move" your domain to Microsoft 365 natively and then slowly move content over...
There are a variety of ways to move everything over and several tools depending on what you want to do. But the process should be
1. Get a new Microsoft 365 environemtn
2. Copy everything from GoDaddy -> New Microsoft 365
3. Move you domain from GoDaddy -> Microsoft 365 (at which point in time all your content you have in GoDaddy is deleted)
Again, maybe they've made it easier since the last time I did it, but the above has been my experience
And everyone else....PLEASE stop buying Microsoft 365 from GoDaddy. They completely ruin it...frankly, I'm shocked Microsoft still allows them to do this...

BenStegink I've been a O365 customer for years - so that I could have the office suite. I've also been a customer of godaddy owning a domain and webhosting services along with email services (I think the main account was free initially with the webhosting/domain package) with some ancillary email accounts for doing business. The business is now defunct but the email domain is well established and I'd like to keep it. Naturally when Godaddy informed us that they were migrating us to O365 I was like... well, I already have an O365 account... no sense in paying Godaddy AND Microsoft, right? I contacted Microsoft support about combining the two and allowing O365 to take over the domain and my email... but they were less than helpful.
What would you suggest? I'd like to keep the domain, lose the webhosting but have it managed by Microsoft rather than two vendors.

BenStegink Wiser words have never been spoken. I initially signed up for Office 365 on Godaddy and it was a nightmare. I bit the bullet and transferred directly to MS. It's so devious the way you think you're getting Office365 but you don't realize Godaddy is the gatekeeper. Shouldn't be allowed. Wish I knew this two years ago.

I have learned this in the hard way. Spent a couple of days to fix an issue with GodaddyMatthew_Zebari

Matthew_Zebari Can't agree more MS shouldn't resell like they are doing with Godaddy. I added license for Visio and couldn't assign or manage it since when I logged to the license administrator it took me to Godaddy and no way to use the license. I had to call Microsoft and go through a labyrinth to get the licenses removed.

Hello BenStegink that what I want, to stop using godaddy office 365, I am in my 14 days waiting that they resolve the issue, I called almost every day and nothing, now they said that the case they are moving to microsoft ( was thursday), so since thursday they are waiting that microsoft resolve the problem, they opened a ticket, what a mess with it 😞
