Sending email as alias in office365?
I know this thread is a little old, but it ranks highly under a Google for this issue so wanted to add more information.
It is now possible to send for alias addresses quite simply using O365 and Outlook.
- Simply add the alias to your account in the usual way in O365 Admin.
- In Outlook, open a new mail and from the "Options" ribbon ensure the 'From' button is pressed to reveal this field.
- Click this drop down and select "other email address".
- Under here you can manually type the email you want to send from
- The next time you return to the from drop down, the address will be there to select with 1 click.
Hope this helps someone one!

James O'Sullivan In keeping with the necro-thread trend - this doesnt work; even if send-as is set, it doesn't allow sending from the alias.
- afabozzi-20Aug 09, 2022Brass Contributor
JWinSC I agree it does not work for me either when it is for sure enabled. The only way I can get it to work is by setting up a POP account with the alias and creating an app password since I have MFA enabled. Here is a walkthrough on my website. I am not very happy with the video (it was my first attempt) I made so I prefer the text walkthrough.

Let me know if you have any questions.
- Victor_IvanidzeAug 09, 2022Bronze ContributorHi afabozzi-20 and JWinSC,
could you please confirm that sending as alias doesn't work in both cases:
1) when you are using OWA
2) when you are using Outlook for Windows

James O'Sullivan the recipient will still receive this email from the primary email address and not the alias. I just tried it.
- afabozzi-20Mar 09, 2021Brass Contributor
nickchristieIf you setup a POP account for the alias and email someone in your organization you are correct it will show the primary address however if you email someone outside your organization it will show correctly. Try a gmail or hotmail address to confirm and let me know. I did this for two account yesterday and emailed my personal address so I know it still works if setup per my instructions. https://www.fabozzi.net/send-from-an-alias-or-secondary-exchange-account-in-outlook/

afabozzi-20 Hi, i did this but ended up with a bug when i resent an email ... it also resent the original email... so if you sent something to someone then opened the sent email and used the resend email option, it resent the new version to the original person.... basically it was buggy.. honestly i don't know why MSoft can't just create an option for multiple email accounts that doesn't involve additional mailboxes...

Thanks James - I've been trying to work this out for hours then found your post! Just a couple of questions to follow - is there a way to change the display name for the alias so it doesn't just show the email address as the name? And can this also be set up on an iPhone to send from the alias? Thanks again

Hi all,
one solution that has occurred to me is to login to a shared mailbox via a pop3 account... i've tried this and it looks possible but i couldn't get the login to work... any thoughts?

There exists ChooseFrom cloud service that allows you to send as alias.

The method you proposed doesn't seem to work properly. It does allow selecting a "from" email however the recipient still sees the primary domain- Victor_IvanidzeJul 02, 2020Bronze Contributor
- afabozzi-20Jul 02, 2020Brass ContributorI am not familiar with that method I will try to find this suggestion. I know the method I use works because I use it on 25+ account currently.

When testing you MUST send to an outside email like a gmail or hotmail for example. If you test to your exchange server it will show as your primary alias.

Has anyone else actually been able to get this to work?
In Outlook Web, I can change the from address to one of my aliases. I get no error message, the email sends, but it shows up as from my primary smtp address.
In Outlook 2016 on Windows, I choose "another email address..." in the from field and choose the alias. Again, no error, but the email arrives from my primary smtp address. In outlook for Windows, though, the sent items folder shows this string:
Nick Handel </o=ExchangeLabs/ou=Exchange Administrative Group (FYDIBOHF23SPDLT)/cn=Recipients/cn=9f3b760eb3874d7380b86e769046ac8b-nick> <nick@xxxdomain.co.uk>
I can send as group email addresses in both Web Outlook and Windows Outlook with no problems.
It's extremely annoying - I agree with the OP that using shared mailboxes etc. is a kluge. I really see no reason not to make it easy for people to use multiple domains to send and receive email - it's hardly as if this is a backdoor to having multiple users sharing a licence - you get one mailbox! In fact, the facilities with shared mailboxes make it easier to do that in some respects if you're willing to have multiple users sharing a login.
Any help or advice gratefully received.

My experience in trying James' solution is identical to Nick's.
I'm able to enter the alias as directed and send the e-mail, but on the receiving end, it does not appear to actually come from that address. I see the same </o=ExchangeLabs/ou=Exchange Administrative Group... string of characters in the From address in my Sent Items.

I have done some testing with regards this and while it works internally, it doesn't work for external emails, which is a shame.

Hi Nick Handel.
This topic has been discussed infinitely in this community and in many other forums.
Sending as an alias in Exchange has never been possible and indeed it is still not possible.
There are workarounds but, as you noted, they are viable, but not satisfactory.
This is the present situation, unfortunately, and that's all.
- James O'SullivanMar 08, 2018Copper Contributor
This is manifestly untrue. My previous post details steps for this to be achieved in a trivial way using Outlook 2016 and Office 365, one of the most common deployment combos.
- Salvatore BiscariFeb 14, 2018Silver Contributor
I am sorry, but I am afraid that it doesn't work...
AFAIK, It is still not possible to send as an alias.
Following your steps, the recipient will get anyway an email sent from the primary address and not from the alias.

- James O'SullivanFeb 14, 2018Copper ContributorThis does 100% work, see these screen shots:
http://personal.klio.co.uk/create-selected.png
As you can see, the top option, mike@mi******.me.uk, is the primary address, the others are typed into Outlook at set as aliases in O365
http://personal.klio.co.uk/outcome.png
When I look at the headers in my outlook, the address typed is shown.- Salvatore BiscariFeb 14, 2018Silver Contributor
Do you have another completely different email address? Try to send an email from an EOL alias, using your technique, to that email address and you will see that the sender of the email is, in any case, the primary address and not the alias.
- Joey BergenFeb 14, 2018Copper ContributorDid you try the steps I’ve written down?
I have this implemented at several customers and is the only solution to send from an alias.- Salvatore BiscariFeb 14, 2018Silver Contributor
I don't need to try it: I know that it works... ;-)
In fact, it is one of the veeery classic workarounds for solving the problem.
- Andy ClarkFeb 13, 2018Copper Contributor
James, is that possible from Outlook for Mac, or only Outlook for Windows?
(and what if people are using Mail for Mac instead?)- Joseph LuoSep 20, 2020Copper Contributor
No, as of today, 9/20/2020, I'm on Outlook for Mac, Version 16.41. It doesn't work . I can't send as alias. Andy Clark
- James O'SullivanFeb 14, 2018Copper ContributorI don't have access to a Mac so can't test this. I tried in Outlook online and was unable to perform the same actions.
- Joseph LuoSep 20, 2020Copper Contributor
As of today 09/20/2020 I'm using outlook for Mace 16.41, still can't send as alias. James O'Sullivan
