Problems with Office 2013 and SharePoint Online

I did raise a support call and I thought I would share the outcome here in case it's useful to anyone else.
It seems that our tenant had been switched to modern authentication.
Office 2013 will support modern authentication but that support is not enabled by default.

We rolled it out accross our estate and it fixed the issue for us.
