Outlook email preview won't display

At first I couldn't click on an email and open it in a new window.  Now my email preview does not display at all.  I have done nothing new.  Downloaded nothing new.  I have been successfully using email since I bought the computer six months ago.  Have rebooted my computer and reset modem several times.  I am able to click on New Email and that window displays.

Thank you for sending as I can save this info for future.  Strangely, I left my computer for a few hours and when I came back, it was working fine.  Thank you for taking the time to provide the thorough suggestions.

  • Take this:

    1. Enable the Reading Pane

    • Open Outlook
    • Go to the View tab
    • Click Reading Pane and select Right or Bottom
    • If it’s already enabled, toggle it off and back on

    1. Check Trust Center Settings

    • Go to File > Options > Trust Center
    • Click Trust Center Settings
    • Under Email Security, make sure “Read all standard mail in plain text” is unchecked

    1. Disable Add-ins

Third-party add-ins can interfere with the preview pane.

    • Go to File > Options > Add-ins
    • Click Manage COM Add-ins > Go
    • Uncheck all add-ins and restart Outlook
    • If preview works, re-enable add-ins one by one to find the culprit

    1. Update Outlook

Microsoft has released updates to fix similar issues.

    • Go to File > Office Account
    • Click Update Options > Update Now

    1. Switch to Outlook Web or Classic

If you're using New Outlook, try switching temporarily:

    • Use Outlook Web
    • Or revert to Classic Outlook via the toggle in the top-right corner (if available)

    1. Recreate Your Outlook Profile

    If nothing else works:

    • Go to Control Panel > Mail > Show Profiles
    • Create a new profile and set it as default
    • Reopen Outlook and reconfigure your account
