Ok, now check the retention policies are in place and valid. This may help - Create and configure retention policies to automatically retain or delete content - Microsoft 365 Compliance | Microsoft Docs
Remember, you can always log a support call inside the MS O365 portal to get assistance. That is available for free.
I will also assume here you have Microsoft 365 Business Premium and there are no longer Office 365 Business plans.
If you are comfortable with PowerShell:
Get-EXOMailbox -Properties Name, RetentionPolicy
and
Start-ManagedFolderAssistant Email address removed
the last one will force the retention policies into action immediately
