Office stuck on loading profile unless you kill background office product

If you open word and then close it, it leaves Microsoft word running in the background tasks. When this happens outlook hangs on loading profile but if you kill word in the task manager outlook start right up. Same with any other office program. If you start outlook before any other office programs then no problems at all unless you close outlook and try to reopen.
