Microsoft Kills Viva Goals

Microsoft’s announcement of the Viva Goals retirement came as a complete surprise to the customers using Viva Goals to implement the OKR methodology for their organization. From Microsoft’s text, it seems pretty clear that Viva Goals just didn’t succeed in winning sufficient customers to warrant ongoing development. The outcome is that Microsoft cut its losses and will retire Viva Goals.

I have just finished onboarding 80% of our organization and have been using the software almost since it was released.  This is a terrible decision and waste of time and resources for so many.  Are you even going to offer an alternative?  Terrible decision.

  • Good news that there is a replacement available that is completely build on Microsoft Power Platform and offers therefore even better customizability.

    Terrible news.

We absolutely love the software and it changed the game in our business.

    Please don't do this!

Why am I not surprised—this is déjà vu from the announcement about shutting down the Performance Point initiative, which was supposed to support Balanced Scorecards. This is yet another smart solution they are discontinuing, causing losses and setbacks for their customers. It’s just unfortunate.

  • Another bad decision by Microsoft. I understand that the adoption was slow but companies like ours didn’t even know this existed until about 3 months ago. Since then we have been aggressively training and implementing it in our business. After we have some hands on experience we were planning on demonstrating it to our clients so they could also implement it. I hope Microsoft changes their mind and doesn’t go through with this decision. The way Viva goals integrates with planner and allows an organization attach daily tasks to company objectives is awesome. Well organized companies need this tool and many of us are already seriously invested. Stop being like Google Microsoft, doing things like this undermine our ability to trust you.

I am disappointed as well as some co-workers. We were getting ready to expand the implementation of Viva Goals as it did prove to be a useful tool for our newly developing Strategy and Innovation Division.

    I hope Microsoft will reconsider.

Completely shocked at this announcement.  It keeps business strategy aligned at the director level and builds buy in from managers a low level workers. It really enforced the story of the NASA janitor who told JFK "i'm helping put a man on the moon" by giving employees the visibility of how they are making a difference in reaching their orgs strategic goals. Perhaps it just wasn't marketed well, from being a regular user it was quite indepth, perhaps simplification and moving it under the MS Planner brand would get more exposure.

I really hope it gets resurrected, if its done right the product serves as a immeasurable tool.
