Mail remains unread after move to another folder

I'm using the Outlook web UI and the Reading pane is hidden.
I'm viewing the email as a fully opened item but the unread flag is only changed when I move to the next mail item or X out of it and return to the list view.
This feels like an unwanted "feature" rather than a setting I can control.

I've changed it to "Mark displayed items as read" after zero seconds which has had the desired effect.
I had mistakely thought that this setting was only applicable when previewing messages. (Which had been my experience in the full Outlook client).
