Is it possible to move the Search Box in Outlook to another position ?
- Feb 27, 2020
Nope. Although they've gone through several iterations on this, so it might change in the future.
Firstly I agree this is an absolutely terrible location for a search bar.
A few things I don't like:
- My webcam comes down over the search box, so I can't see what I'm typing
- There's no dynamic search i.e. it doesn't pull up results as I type, I have to press enter to search
- You can't drag the box around to a location you prefer
- WORST OF ALL - when it autosuggests searches the dropdown falls over all the search icons in the main ribbon (subfolders/current mailbox/filetype/Has Attachments) etc. so you can't choose them without coming out of search!
This is an absolutely terrible design and whoever came up with it should be instantly dismissed.
Having said that, I have found a solution of sorts...
Using Outlook Options, or a quick way, just right click on the command ribbon/toolbar at the top an choose "Customise the Ribbon..."
Then click on Quick Access Toolbar in the left Menu.
Then add a bunch of random stuff to the Quick Access Toolbar.
Each button you add will shift the search box a little to the right. If you add enough shortcuts to the QAT, then the Search Box will shift enough to the right so that when you use it any dropdowns will clear the right side of your inbox and also your buttons will now be visible.
Very frustrating but the above workaround makes it just about tolerable.
Hope this helps!

jbtparsons thanks for your answer. It would appear to me that no one from Microsoft gives a shit or is even reading this thread or others like it.
