Setting an auto-reply for a group mailbox works for me. I used the same PowerShell from the article to update the auto-reply for a group mailbox. Waited 2 minutes. Sent a message to the group mailbox, and bingo!

Thanks! This means there may be some tenant's specific restrictions in the background or yet another "weird" Microsoft bug :( Configured with SET and GET confirms all changes in place. However despite waiting a few hours no reply is being sent at all (regardless of the sender's domain).
