exporting Word document with hyphenated words to PDF
I am attaching a Word document in which some words are hyphenated. I'd like to export the document to PDF file so that the search function in Adobe Acrobat Reader can find a given word even if it is hyphenated.
I tested this with Microsoft Word for Microsoft 365 MSO, Version 2312 Build 16.0.17126.20132 64-bit, running on Windows 10 Pro. 22H2 64-bit. For opening PDF files I use Adobe Acrobat Reader as a reference application (ver. 2020 with the latest updates installed).
I exported the document to PDF file with File > Export action - attached here as test_exported.pdf. When I open the file with Acrobat Reader, it cannot find hyphenated words (for example "reference") in the text.
Then I exported the document to PDF file by printing it to "Microsoft Print to PDF" printer - attached here as test_printed.pdf. In this PDF file the Acrobat Reader can find hyphenated words in the text which is great. But the Print to PDF action sets the Author property in the PDF file to the full name of Windows user who printed the document and there is no option in Word or the printer to avoid that. So, I need to use another piece of software which can edit properties of the PDF files to remove the author.
I'd like the Export to PDF engine in Word be fixed so that it can handle hyphenated words properly.
While testing this issue, I also noticed that Export to PDF and Print to PDF use different rendering of text, which means that letters have slightly different position in a line of text (it happens no matter which font is used in the text). You can see that if you open the two PDFs in separate Acrobat Reader windows, zoom in to page width and then switch between the two windows with Alt-Tab.
