Does OneDrive for personal account work yet?

You do have an option in OneDrive to choose what folders to sync. That the files are just lost in a sync sounds like a strange issue that I have never encountered anywhere. It must have been the abort that caused an issue.

In OneDrive, under settings, you can choose what folders to backup. I have as an exampled disabled my Videos folder as I manage that in another way and have more data in that folder than I have available space for in my OneDrive account.

    FYI, you must be using a different version of OneDrive that I am. I have the 365 Family Plan which does not support syncing or choosing folders for backup.

    Thanks for the info. I decided to end my 365 subscripion and go to Google Workspace. MS 365 platform is a bunch of ad hoc patches built on 1990's tech making for an unreliable clould platform. I may return to MS if and when they figure out how to build a modern cloud experience.
