Do I need an Exchange Server?
Adam
Well, the only supported method of managing Exchange attributes is Exchange admin center or Exchange Management Shell. And really, the more I think about it, the more I think I'm going to need one.
If I have to change an email address, I would have to use ProxyAddresses in ADUC - which is technically an unsupported method. And I'm pretty sure that Hide from address list, even with the schema not extended, is still somehow in AD.
Darn. I think I'm going to need the server to be in a supported configuration.

Having a running server on premises just for the sake of attributes defeats the purpose of exchange online! - Oct 15, 2018Proxyaddress has been working well for me many times, and you can extend the schema without installing exchange server

Yes. Yes, you can do those things and you can use ADSIEdit and it will work. But the key here is "supported". Microsoft only SUPPORTS using EAC/EMS. As a consultant, I cannot in good conscious put my customers in an unsupported configuration, especially since they are using enterprise O365 licensing, which gets them a Hybrid Exchange License Key.
