Accessing an App through 'Open in new window' from Teams only opens file error

Hello,

I have deleted an Excel file from a SharePoint folder that I don't need anymore. Now, when I try to open Excel 365 from 'Open in new window' in Teams, I don't get to the usual landing page with recent files, options for a new file, etc. but just an error message: 'Sorry, this file has been deleted or moved', referring to the file that I have indeed deleted.

I can access the usual landing page if it's in the Excel 365 window embedded in Teams, but opening the app in a new window is no longer possible. Why would the landing page for opening an app in a new window not be the normal landing page, but just an error message, with no option to open another file, seems counter-intuitive. Does anyone have a solution?

Best regards,

MJ

  • This happens because Teams is still trying to open the last file you accessed through the “Open in new window” option, which in your case has been deleted. Instead of opening the Excel home page, Teams is following that old file link and showing the error. To fix it, sign out of Teams, clear the app cache, and restart it, this usually removes the stored reference to the deleted file. If that doesn’t help, try opening Excel directly from the Teams app launcher or through another document, which forces it to create a fresh window. As a last step, updating or reinstalling Teams can also reset the integration with Office apps and get the “Open in new window” option working normally again.

Thanks, Jenkins, I'm marking it as resolved as a thank you for your kind answer. The following remark goes to Microsoft: the level of ensh***ification in your products is offending and outraging. Who programmes a function to open an app in a new window with the hard-coded assumption that the previous file you used is still there, and if it is not, you have to sign out and clear the cache? If we had had only programmers like that in the 1980's when these products were pioneered, we'd probably still be writing spreadsheets with pen and paper, because otherwise we wouldn't have gotten anywhere. Dear Lord, Microsoft, get a grip!
