User cannot rename categories even when being the owner

Hi guys,

 

I have a user that cannot rename categories in a mailbox whilst being the owner.

 

 

As you can her permission level is set on owner.

 

 

And yet the rename is greyed out:

User says she was able to rename just some time ago, but when she tried on 17/04/2026 she couldn't. Anyone has any ideas?

    Based on the images I assume that Outlook Classic is being used

    There are a few quick options to try

    • Click directly on the user's own Inbox in the nav pane, then go to Categorize > All Categories, not while any other folder is active
    • Try accessing categories via Outlook on the Web (OWA), if rename works there, the issue is client-side
    • Run Outlook with the /resetnavpane switch to rule out a profile/nav pane issue:
      outlook.exe /resetnavpane
    • Create a new Outlook profile and test, if it works in a fresh profile, the existing profile is corrupted.

    is the user accessing this mailbox through a standarard profile, or is there an additional mailbox present in the same profile?
