Hey Rob,
AWS expects EWS not EAS for email syncing, and EWS is not supported by Outlook 2016.
Try the following I hope it helps:
- Navigate to Control Panel > Mail > Add (Add the gmail account first using auto setup)
- Give your profile a name, then select Pop or Imap
- Select Account Type and add your mail servers (incoming: imap.mail.<region>.awsapps.com, outgoing: smtp.mail.<region>.awsapps.com)
- Select More Settings > Advanced
- Use ports 993 for IMAP and 465 for SMTP, both with SSL encryption
- Select Outgoing Server, Enable both My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication, and Use same settings as my incoming mail server.
- Click Ok > Next > Finish, restart Outlook
