XL Spread sheet

When I open an existing XL file that has been saved to my desktop I get a blank screen with the tool bar and command icons greyed out. None of my data is visible.

I have tried opening from XL -same result

I have tried opening from file Explorer - same result

Can anyone help with this issue.
