Why doesn't this function work?

EDIT: PROBLEM SOLVED (SIMPLE FORMATTING ERROR --> Solution is to change column E format to Number if set to Date format)

Hello,

     I am trying to make a countdown timer for various ToDo Lists I make and was thinking the following formula would work:

 

  • =DAYS(D4,TODAY())

but the only result I get is: 

  • "1/3/1900"

     I have attached a sample file (see Cell E4), if someone knows how to accomplish this task please chime in, many thanks.

    Graham,

     

    The problem is in formatting, change the format of the cell to General format.

    Go to Home >> Number

    And you will notice that cell is formatted as Date.

    You can change the format from the drop-down list to General format.

    Or you can use the keyboard shortcut: Ctrl+Shift+~
